Screening and Early Detection

Strategic Focus

The Screening and Early Detection priority area focuses on increasing access to evidence-based cancer screening, improving early detection, and strengthening timely follow-up through coordinated, systems-level strategies across Idaho.

Plan Goals

  • Reduce the burden of screenable cancers through targeted screening and early detection.

  • Decrease premature death from prostate cancer.

These goals address breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers, as well as late-stage melanoma of the skin, with an emphasis on improving screening access, early detection, and appropriate follow-up.

Strategic Priorities

  • Increase access to evidence-based cancer screening services.

  • Strengthen systems for timely follow-up after abnormal screening results.

  • Promote alignment with current screening guidelines and shared decision-making.

  • Reduce geographic, financial, and structural barriers to screening.

  • Support patient navigation, hereditary cancer risk assessment, and appropriate referrals.

Implementation

Implementation is supported through collaboration with healthcare systems, public health programs, and community partners. The Screening and Treatment Steering Committee helps align partners, identify gaps, and guide coordinated strategies to improve screening access, timely follow-up, and early detection statewide.

Related Data and Measurement

Progress is monitored through indicators established in the 2026–2030 Idaho Cancer Plan, including screening participation, late-stage cancer incidence, cervical cancer incidence, and premature death from prostate cancer.

Steering Committee Focus

The Screening and Treatment Steering Committee supports coordinated efforts to improve cancer screening, early detection, and access to appropriate care. Partners identify barriers, share resources, and guide strategies that strengthen screening and follow-up systems.

Topic-specific subgroups may advance focused initiatives and report progress to the Steering Committee.
